Bill van Gilders’ 2012
Slip, Glaze and Decorating Pigment Recipes

Here are the slip, glaze and decorating pigment recipes Bill has been using at his Frederick Pottery School, Inc., in his studio for his production and personal work (wood-fire and gas, reduction) and on his DIY Network Television shows.

As detailed, each recipe is sieved twice through an 80-mesh sieve.

Note that the materials wollastonite, bone ash and zinc oxide are often supplied in a coarse, ‘chunky’ bagged condition.  Before adding a weighed amount of these materials to a glaze batch, each material is first mixed with a small quantity of warm water in a blender, and then poured into the powdered batch.  Additional water is then added to the batch total, mixed vigorously and sieved twice.

A 10,000 gram batch of dry material will produce approximately 4 to 4 ½ gallons of liquid glaze.
